Stockholm Skavsta Airport

Stockholm Skavsta is a good example of how generously airports use city names. It lies near Nyköping, around 100 kilometres south-west of the capital and seven kilometres from the local railway station. If you land here, you've completed the shorter part of your journey, not the longer one.

Who flies here

For a long time the airport was Ryanair's Swedish base. That's over: the airline moved its routes to Arlanda in October 2021 and hasn't returned. Scheduled services are now operated by Wizz Air and Norwegian, mostly on routes to Central and Eastern Europe, plus holiday destinations in Spain.

The terminal is compact and built for point-to-point traffic: one hall, short walks, little going on between the waves of departures. Don't expect what a large airport offers, either in food or in opening hours.

The airport bus to Stockholm

The link to the city is the Flygbussarna airport bus. It stops right outside the terminal building and terminates at Cityterminalen next to Central Station, at gate 5. The journey takes around 80 minutes.

There's no regular-interval timetable on this route: departures follow the flight schedule. After landing, the bus usually leaves 30 to 45 minutes later, and the operator advises heading straight to the stop once you have your luggage. In the other direction, it recommends leaving Cityterminalen three hours before departure.

• Travellers aged 8 to 25: 209 SEK one way, 409 SEK return
• Children up to 7: free, up to four children per adult

One detail makes planning easier: the ticket is valid for three months on any departure on the route you booked, in either direction. So buying it doesn't tie you to a time, and a delay doesn't cost you a new ticket. Buying online or in the app is cheapest. At the airport there's a counter at the entrance, staffed when flights arrive, plus machines at the terminal and at the stop; on the bus you can only pay by card.

Flixbus also stops at the Verkstadsskolan stop on General Schybergs väg, a few hundred metres from the terminal. It's the cheaper, slower option, and it starts with a walk.

Arriving late in the evening

Because departures are tied to the flight schedule, there's a bus waiting even after the last flight of the day. But the time adds up: landing, baggage belt, half an hour to three quarters of an hour waiting, 80 minutes on the road. A landing at 23:00 becomes an arrival at Cityterminalen around 01:00. Work out beforehand how you'll get from there to your accommodation.

If you'd rather spend the night in Nyköping, the timetable is tighter. The local bus there isn't an airport bus but a regular service: the last one leaves in the late evening, a little later on weekend nights, and it never runs round the clock. After that, your option is a pre-booked taxi, which the airport arranges through its booking portal.

Early return flight

The airport asks you to be at the terminal at least two hours before departure; check-in closes 40 minutes and the gate 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time. Work backwards from there: two hours at the airport, 80 minutes on the bus, plus a buffer. That's exactly the three hours Flygbussarna itself gives as the departure time from Cityterminalen.

For a late-morning flight, that works comfortably. For a flight before 08:00 you'd have to leave Stockholm before 05:00, and then you should check the timetable before booking the flight, not after. If no bus runs that early, the cheap flight costs you an extra night in Nyköping or at the airport, which usually wipes out the saving.

By train via Nyköping

The airport has no railway station of its own. The nearest is Nyköping Centralstation, seven kilometres away; Sörmlandstrafiken bus route 515 links the terminal and the station in around twelve minutes. A single ticket within one zone costs 35 SEK, or 23 SEK reduced (as of July 2026). You can buy it at Pressbyrån at the airport, in the transport authority's app or on the bus, where only cards are accepted.

From Nyköping, Mälartåg regional trains take about an hour to Stockholm. All in all, that means two changes instead of one direct ride, and route 515 runs to its own timetable, not your flight's. The combination is therefore mainly worth it if Nyköping or a town along the line is your destination anyway, or if the airport bus times don't suit you.

A station at the airport itself is planned as part of the Ostlänken high-speed line and would cut the journey time to Stockholm considerably. It's expected in the 2030s and plays no part in trips today.

Do the sums before you book

Around three hours of transfers there and back, plus the fare both ways: that's the extra cost compared with a flight to Arlanda, where the Arlanda Express gets you to the centre in 18 minutes. Bromma, at eight kilometres, would be even closer but has practically lost its scheduled traffic; Västerås is as far out as Skavsta and calls for the same sums.

Whether Skavsta is worth it therefore comes down to two numbers: how big the difference in air fare is and how long you're staying. On a short city break, a good part of a day goes on getting there and back; over two weeks it hardly matters.
