Stockholm Västerås is the smallest of the four airports bearing the capital's name, and the one where the name means least. It lies 110 km west of Stockholm, around five kilometres east of the town of Västerås on Lake Mälaren, and is owned by the City of Västerås and Region Västmanland. In 2025 it handled around 88,000 passengers, ranking 16th among Swedish airports.
Who flies here
Scheduled traffic is essentially provided by Ryanair, with a few routes to Alicante, London Stansted and Málaga. The schedule changes more by season than at the large airports, and the number of connections is limited. One terminal, short walks, and check-in that follows the rhythm of the few flights.
The way to Stockholm

Alternatively, take the local bus to Västerås Central station and the train from there. It's less convenient, but can be worth it if your destination in Stockholm isn't near Central Station or you're heading further west anyway.
When Västerås is the right choice
When the region is your destination. Västerås lies on the north shore of Lake Mälaren, which stretches all the way into Stockholm, and is a town in its own right, with a cathedral, an old town and a harbour. If you want to explore the lakeside area or are travelling to Västerås on business, you're far better off here than at one of the Stockholm airports.
For a pure city break in Stockholm, the same sums apply as for Skavsta: around three hours of transfers there and back plus the fare, set against the cheaper flight. For comparison, from Arlanda the Arlanda Express gets you to the centre in 18 minutes.
