FAQs about Stockholm's airports

In the vast majority of cases, Arlanda. Practically all of the region's scheduled traffic runs through it, including international connections. Still, check the airport code on your boarding pass: ARN is Arlanda, BMA is Bromma, NYO stands for Skavsta near Nyköping and VST for Västerås.

Because the name refers to the region, not the city. Only Arlanda and Bromma are actually on Stockholm's doorstep. Skavsta belongs to Nyköping and is 100 km away, Västerås as much as 110 km. For airlines the name is a selling point; for travellers it's a reason to do the sums.

Bromma, at around eight kilometres. In practice that doesn't help much, as there are hardly any scheduled flights left. The closest airport with regular traffic is Arlanda, 37 km away.

The airport is open, but its scheduled traffic has almost entirely disappeared. In 2025 Bromma handled around 25,000 passengers, compared with more than a million the year before. What remains are a few regional routes and, above all, business flights.

The Arlanda Express: 18 minutes non-stop to Stockholm C (Central Station), with departures every 12 to 15 minutes. Nothing else beats that, not even a taxi. All options are compared on the From Arlanda to the city page.

If you're on your own and not in a hurry, the airport bus or the Pendeltåg (SL commuter train) from Arlanda C station below Sky City, both around 40 minutes. On the Pendeltåg, the Arlandapassage, a fee for the airport railway station, is added to the SL ticket. The SL + Arlanda combined ticket includes both. How to pay for SL in Stockholm is explained under public transport. For families the train is often cheaper, because children up to 17 travel free on the Arlanda Express with an adult.

The airport bus stops at stop 1 outside Terminal 5 and stop 6 outside Terminal 2 and runs to Cityterminalen next to Central Station; the journey from Terminal 5 takes 42 minutes. The Terminal 5 stop has been served again since 24 March 2026, after spending five years at Terminal 4 while the security checkpoint was rebuilt.

On top of the journey itself come the walk to the platform or stop, check-in and security. On the Arlanda Express the ride takes 18 minutes, but to be safe allow half an hour from Central Station. By bus or Pendeltåg, add traffic or a possible change.

Not if you go to the taxi rank. In Sweden taxi companies set their own prices, but only Swedavia's contracted taxis wait at the airport, outside the Terminal 5 arrivals hall and outside Terminal 2. They take you to the inner-city zone for a fixed maximum fare. Drivers who approach you in the hall aren't among them.

You don't have to, but it's practical: with the code on your phone you walk straight from baggage reclaim to the platform instead of queuing at the machine. The ticket is valid for 90 days on any departure and can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours beforehand.

Yes. Children and young people aged 0 to 17 travel free on the Arlanda Express with an adult, without a ticket of their own. The operator offers cheaper fares for young adults aged 18 to 25 and travellers aged 65 and over.

That depends on your plans. Stockholm's passes bundle admissions and sightseeing tours and pay off from a certain number of visits per day. The airport transfer isn't included, so the two complement each other rather than replacing one another.

No. Ryanair moved its routes from Skavsta to Arlanda in October 2021 and hasn't returned. Scheduled services at the airport are now operated by Wizz Air and Norwegian. In the region, Ryanair still serves Västerås.

From Skavsta around 80 minutes, and from Västerås also around 80 minutes, on the airport bus to Cityterminalen. From Skavsta, departures follow flight times rather than a regular-interval timetable.

Only if the price difference outweighs the transfer. The journey there and back adds up to around three hours plus two bus fares. On a weekend in Stockholm that's a noticeable part of the trip; on a longer stay it hardly matters.

A stop on the Ostlänken high-speed line is planned, which would roughly halve the journey time to Stockholm. It's expected in the 2030s and plays no part in trips today.

Terminal 2 and Terminal 5 are in operation. Terminal 4 is now part of Terminal 5, and the Terminal 3 security checkpoint has been closed since 1 September 2026, with the area reached via Terminal 2. The terminal also determines where you board the Arlanda Express: Arlanda Norra for Terminal 5, Arlanda Södra for Terminal 2.

Yes, several are on the Arlanda site, some within walking distance of the terminals, others reached by shuttle. The overview with a map is under airport hotels. For departures before 06:00, that's usually a calmer option than travelling out from the city.

Yes. Around 60 SJ and Vy Tåg long-distance trains stop at Arlanda C station every day, plus Mälartåg regional trains. Uppsala is 18 minutes away. If you're not staying in Stockholm, this saves you the detour via Central Station.
